You can learn much about the secrets of the city's history from the lines etched in the walls of the St.Mark's Basilica. The first best place you can probably alight is the San Marco Square. You enter an amazing labyrinth of passageways criss-crossing with one another from this Square. You can get a taste and feel of the real "Venice" here. Alternating canals and soft-hued bridges add colour to the city.
The Gothic palaces which line the main square are a tribute to the famed Venetian architecture. A halt at the Campo Santa Maria Formosa would prove to be worth your time. And if you feel like paying honours to a few important Venetians, who once lived in the city, you can probably head to the church of San Giovanni de Paolo in the Cannaregio district. Well, if I were you I would never compromise on visiting the house of none other than the globe-trotting Venetain, Marco Polo and catch hold of a few interesting tales .
